Jim started his career with Merrill Lynch in 1972. When he left Merrill Lynch in 1975, he was the top revenue producer in his peer group in the entire firm. He then spent over eight years with Texas Commerce Bank (now JP Morgan Chase) where he rose to be the head of commercial lending for Texas and the surrounding states. He returned to the securities industry in 1985, joining Paine Webber as Senior Vice President where he met Tim Vos. In January 1988, Jim and Tim became partners at Paine Webber.
