Holding a Masters of Science in Applied Finance from the Singapore Management University and a Bachelor of Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Carl was an investment analyst at a hedge fund covering the Southeast Asian market. He also served 13 years in the Republic of Singapore Air Force as a Weapon Systems Officer / Intelligence Officer (Air Intelligence) in various roles in air defence and intelligence.
